Water Issues in Southern Westchester

An announcement forward to us from the Town of Greenburgh CAC:

The Town of Greenburgh Conservation Advisory Council is pleased to announce that Westchester County Legislator for the 12th District, MaryJane Shimsky, will speak at the public meeting of the CAC on March 8 (Thursday), 7 pm, at Greenburgh Town Hall, on water issues in Southern Westchester.
 
Most of the communities in Southern Westchester consist of hills and valleys.  Some communities have a heavy presence of bedrock, with often only several feet (or less) of soil of top of the bedrock.   Southern Westchester communities are generally highly developed and activities on one property, such as adding impervious surfaces or removing trees and vegetation, frequently affects water flows on neighboring properties and protected natural features.   Impacts can include damaging foundations of existing homes, soil erosion, and potentially even flooding of local residential and commercial areas and Westchester watercourses such as the Bronx River and the Saw Mill River.
 
The discussion will focus on balancing the need for development with the need for protecting the environment of Southern Westchester.  Among other things to be discussed are prioritizing green solutions to keep the water on site.
 
The Westchester County 12th District includes parts of unincorporated Greenburgh (including Edgemont and Hartsdale), and the Villages of Ardsley, Dobbs Ferry, Hastings-on-Hudson, and Irvington.   The program is part of the efforts of MaryJane Shimsky and other County Legislators to coordinate communities in addressing these important problems. Members of Westchester CACs and the general public are invited and welcome to attend.

Dromore Road Legal Fund

There are concerns in the community regarding a proposed multi-family-housing development at Dromore Road (located behind the high school near the Greenburgh Nature Center.) This letter, from the Edgemont Community Council, provides an overview of the situation and requests community donations to support a legal fund aimed at addressing the issue.

A Traffic Safety Issue That Affects All Our Children. Help Us Prevent a Tragedy.

CROSSWALK BACKGROUND AND UPDATE
Supervisor Feiner—and the proposed crosswalk engineer—will be holding a community meeting on Saturday, November 19, at 10:00 am at Crane’s Pond to discuss the Crane's Pond raised crosswalk. By way of background:

• The raised crosswalk has been requested by Edgemont residents for years.
• The raised crosswalk has been recommended by the Town of Greenburgh Police Department.
• The raised crosswalk was recommended by an independent traffic-safety consultant hired by the Town.
• The raised crosswalk has the support of the Town’s Parks and Recreation Advisory Board and the Town Planning Board.
• The Town Board has approved Town Recreation funds to pay for the crosswalk (subject only to the report and final recommendation of the traffic engineer.)

RESIDENT FEEDBACK NEEDED
Despite the above-listed Town support, Mr. Feiner has indicated he will support the recommendations of the majority of people who attend the 11/19 meeting. To ensure the building of the long-requested raised crosswalk, the Edgemont Association believes it is important for the neighborhood to show its support for the raised crosswalk. If you're able to attend the 11/19 meeting, we'll see you there. If you cannot attend, PLEASE POST A COMMENT BELOW. We will print all comments and deliver them to the Town.

Crane's Pond Crosswalk Meeting

A message from Town Supervisor Paul Feiner regarding the Crane's Pond cross walk:

MEETING:  Saturday, NOVEMBER 19th at 10 AM TO DISCUSS PROPOSED CROSSWALK AT CRANE’S POND
 
Dear neighbor:
  As promised, we will hold a community meeting at Crane’s Pond on Sasturday, November 19th at 10 AM to discuss the proposed crosswalk that is being suggested for the road. In the event of rain/snow we will reschedule for December 3rd at 10 AM.
  We will ask the consultant to show residents exactly where the crosswalk is being placed. I want to emphasize that once the crosswalk is placed at the location the town will not spend any taxpayer dollars to remove the crosswalk in the event that the community does not like it. This has been my major concern over the years.
  I hope to see you at the meeting and will support the recommendations of the majority of people at the meeting.

2011 Neighborhood Halloween Parade

Gabe Darger Eagle Scout Project

For his Boy Scout Eagle Projcet, Gabe Darger will be improving the pathway on Artillery Road, which is behind Edgemont Jr. Sr. High School. The project will take place on Friday September 30th from 1:00 to 5:00 and also on Saturday October 1st from 8:00 to 11:30. Any volunteers from the community would be much appreciated. If possible, volunteers should bring gloves, shovels, clippers, or any other hand tools. Food will be provided for the volunteers. People may park on Artillery Road.

Popham Road Bridge Lane Closure

In conjunction with the Popham Road Bridge Replacement Project, the Popham Road Bridge will be closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic from 6:00 p.m. Friday, July 29, 2011, until 6:00 a.m. Saturday, July 30, 2011. The Bridge closure is necessary for contractors to install the structural steel on the north side of Bridge which requires the contractors to operate a crane and other equipment adjacent to the Bridge deck. Westbound Popham Road vehicular traffic will be detoured south on Scarsdale Avenue west to Harney Road and north to Garth Road back to Popham Road. Eastbound Popham Road vehicular traffic will be detoured south on Garth Road east to Harney Road and north on Scarsdale Avenue back to Popham Road. During this construction activity, pedestrians must use the Metro-North and Freightway Parking Garage pedestrian bridges to cross over the Metro-North Railroad tracks.

Edgemont Fundraiser for the Find Lauren Fund

Thursday, 7 p.m. at the Edgemont High School Football Field

Residents of the extended Edgemont community are invited to "Take A Stand to #FindLauren," a fundraiser for the Find Lauren Fund, this Thursday, June 16, 7 p.m. at the EHS Football Field at Edgemont Junior Senior High School. Bring your mats, towels, $10 or $20 bills and learn or enjoy simple yoga moves while sending positive energy and thoughts to bring Lauren back to Edgemont. 100% of the donations will go to the Find Lauren fund. Even if yoga is not your thing, please join the Edgemont community to show the Spierers our love and support. Please spread the word. Everyone is welcome.

Our hearts and prayers are with Lauren and the Spierer family during this difficult time. Edgemont Association Annual Meeting

Popham Road Bridge Lane Closure

Due to work on the Popham Road Bridge, Scarsdale Avenue/East Parkway will have lane closures and be necked down to one lane of vehicular traffic in alternating directions on Friday, May 13, 2011 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The lane closures are required to permit pile driving operations adjacent to the bridge. The pile driving operation may be very loud as obstructions may be encountered. All care will be taken to minimize the impacts to the community and restore vehicular traffic to its regular pattern as quickly as possible.

Earth Day in Edgemont a Resounding Success

Our annual Earth Day clean-up and BBQ was a great success on so many levels.  Many thanks to all of the directors that helped organize and run this event and to all of the community members that came out to help and to enjoy the festivities.

The pots at the pond are beautifully planted, hopefully to Janice Gates Kelly's specifications!  Many thanks to her for designing the pots and purchasing the plants, again!

About six refuse bags of debris was cleaned up from the median triangle and the "Old Edgemont" rock bed.

Several people put on rubber gloves and took a walk along the BRP path to collect several bags worth of trash. Resident Deanna Elstrom came up with this idea and even continued the collection from the train station up along Ardsley Road.

Many thanks to the brave kids that fished trash out of Crane's pond with makeshift fishing rods.

Many thanks to the entire McCormack clan that comes out every year to help with this event.  They bring their grill and equipment and Tom cooks for everyone.  Most importantly, they help remind everyone in attendance why Old Edgemont is such a great place to live.

As always, Director Mike Levine provided the fun and games for the kids.  He is truly part camp counselor and part Santa Claus.  The games are always different and always enjoyed.  This year he had the participants racing to sweep sponges into dustpans and catching ping pong balls into plastic bibs they were wearing.  Earth Day at Crane's Pond wouldn't be the same without Mike's fun, games and prizes!

Early in the event we joked that we should have brought chalk to draw in the crosswalk that Frank Kaiman has been so diligently fighting for on our behalf (for almost FIVE years now).  It is too bad that we didn't because Paul Feiner stopped by towards the end of the event and many residents discussed the crosswalk with him and let him know, yet again, that WE WANT OUR CROSSWALK and WE WANT IT NOW!

Everyone enjoyed the BBQ food (especially the watermelon and the cookies!).  Leftover food was donated to the Open Arms Shelter in White Plains. They were very appreciative.

Again, many thanks to the directors and their family members that spent time and energy on this event (Jon Guttenberg, Thom Hamill, Christine Howard, Janice Gates Kelly, Mike Levine, Erin Sullivan-Theisen, Beth Stephens, Travis Stratford and Deirdre Verne) and the the community members that came out to enjoy it with us. And thanks most of all to Lauren Ricci Warren, our fearless leader, for heading up the entire event, getting us all where we needed to be when we needed to be there, and for providing a fun filled day for everyone!

Late Night Noise

Was your sleep disturbed overnight on Wednesday April 27th? In case you didn't know, the noise was caused by construction on the Popham Road bridge project in Scarsdale Village. Although the Association is not able to stop the noise from happening, we are working with Greenburgh and Scarsdale town officials to mitigate it as much as possible and to get information for our residents about when overnight noise can be expected. Any information that is provided to us about the construction will be posted on this blog. ECC Annual Meeting Wednesday 4/27

PLEASE DON'T FORGET TO ATTEND THE EDGEMONT COMMUNITY COUNCIL ANNUAL MEETING -- It's this Wednesday, April 27th at 8 p.m. in the Greenville School Cafeteria, where the ECC will be honoring Greenville fifth grade teacher Paul Solomon with the annual Silver Bowl Award for distinguished community service. Paul has lived in Edgemont for more than 30 years. He is retiring this June after 37 years in the school district.  And for the past 34 years, he has been executive director of Edgemont Rec which, under his leadership, has donated nearly $2 million to the school district. Come join the ECC in honoring Paul Solomon.  Also, our guest speaker this year will be former Scarsdale Mayor Carolyn Stevens who will speak about "Municipal Government:  Controlling Your Own Destiny."  Finally, we will be electing new officers and directors, including a new president.
